9 Ball High Roller Report

FRIDAY 19th and SATURDAY 20th MAY.

Congratulations go to Filipino Hotshot Roland Garcia for winning our 9 Ball High Roller Competition on Saturday night.

50 players set out on the road to victory on Friday afternoon, creating a Total Prize Fund of 100,000 baht and a 1st Prize of 28,000.

Out of those 50 we had 28 qualifiers into a Double Elimination Main Event, with 22 non-qualifiers playing in a Double Elimination Plate Competition, which would all come to a conclusion on Saturday evening.

And as we reached the climax of the event, after 150 separate matches and well over 1200 racks of pool had been played, Roland would meet Tommy Fineman from Israel in the Grand Final.

Tommy had already beaten Roland once en-route to the final, so for Garcia to claim victory, he would have to beat Tommy twice with the race set at 8-4 and Tommy receiving ball spots on the 5+7 in each rack.

Roland duly obliged by winning the first set 8-2, although he did lose the first rack, and once again he got off to a bad start in the deciding set to go 1-0 behind.

This didn’t really affect him though, as he won the next 8 racks to seal the win and claim the 1st Prize.

Roland might not have played the faultless pool during the tournament that he expects of himself, but once again he produced the goods when it mattered most, and was a worthy winner.

Tommy played some excellent stuff to finish in 2nd place, winning 7 consecutive matches to reach the final, claiming the scalps of pro players Richard Bong Bata, Stuart Pettman, and Roland along the way, and took home 16,000 baht as Runner-Up.

Another mid-range handicapper, Sharon Michaelovic, also from Israel, performed superbly to finish in 3rd Place and collect 10,000 baht.
He recorded impressive victories over Thailand’s National 9 Ball Champion Pipe Tanat Makkamontee, and Filipino’s Arnel Bautista and Richard Bong Bata on his way to the One Loss Side Final where he would be edged out by the eventual champion in a hill hill thriller (race 8-4) after leading 3-1.

Richard Bong Bata made it two Filipinos and two Israelis in the Top 4 places, playing consistently to a very high standard, and received 8000 baht.

There were notable performances from three other mid-range handicappers too.
The USA’s Sean Ezell played as solid as ever to finish in Equal 5th Place, and Thailand’s Tong Songyouth Wattanasagonpunt from Bangkok, and Vincent Coleman from Ireland, both played well to finish in Equal 7th Place.

The Plate Competition, which was for the 22 non-qualifiers from the Group Stages on the first day, was dominated by the Sports Academy guys from Bangkok, Ramy Helmy from Egypt, and Billy Farooq from Pakistan.

Ramy remained undefeated, winning five consecutive matches to claim the 1st Prize of 7500 baht, whilst Billy would only lose out to his friend twice, and take home the Runners-Up Prize of 5000 baht.

Pen Thaniyaporn Chaithaveesiri, one of the lowest handicapped players in the whole field, would finish in 3rd Place, collecting 3500 baht.
